  5.     Air Jordans, designer jeans, starter jackets -- the fashion
  6. competition among even pre-teenage children on Chicago's grim
  7. West Side is not just fierce, it's murderous. Toughs steal
  8. high-priced apparel right off their schoolmates' backs, and
  9. sometimes the victim gets killed in the process. Now the
  10. advisory council at Tilton Elementary School has decided to put
  11. an end to the status strife. The school has adopted a new
  12. voluntary uniform: navy slacks, white shirts and ties for the
  13. boys; white blouses and blue skirts or jumpers for the girls.

  15.     Similar dress codes are in force at public inner-city
  16. schools in Baltimore, Detroit and New Haven, Conn. Encouraged
  17. by the program's success (at week's end 480 of the school's 800
  18. students were wearing the new outfits), members of the advisory
  19. council may make uniforms mandatory in September. "Some of the
  20. girls say I'm a nerd," said smiling fifth-grader LaDonna
  21. Wright, proudly wearing her jumper and blouse, "but I say, `I'm
  22. a radical dudette.'"
